I Really Love Her - Ringo Starr (2003)
Man o man I used to be in love with Ringo Rama back when it came out. When I pulled it out today to have a nostalgic listen, I really expected to be pretty embarrassed about how much I used to listen to this, but overall I was surprised at how much I still enjoyed it.
Yes, the lyrics aren’t ever that great (I Think Therefore I Rock N Roll? Really?) and it’s riddled with weird Beatle references that never quite come off correctly, but the one thing that does come across over all 14 tracks (16 in this DELUXE version I own) is that everybody involved in making this album had a great time working on it.
And a former Beatle can always attract a few pinch hitters to guest on their album — Van Dyke Parks, David Gilmour, Charlie Haden and that one guitarist from Cream all make appearances.
The above track is the final ‘bonus hidden track’ on the original release. It’s the only song to date wherein Ringo has sang and played every instrument on a track, so I guess that’s pretty impressive.
All in all, a pretty fun listen despite its varied flaws. But hey, Bob Dylan has made far worse albums…
