Ding Dang - The Beach Boys (Recorded 1973, Released 1977)

As we fly ever closer to flipping the record of 2011 over to Side B, here’s a little waning Beach Boys tune for the waning days of summer.

This lil’ bit of sun fun was a collaboration between Brian Wilson and Ol’ Granny Glasses Roger McGuinn, according to the finest sources. This little tune was rescued from the rarities vault and slapped on ‘77’s Love You to close out Side One of Brian Wilson’s favorite Beach Boys album.

Classic music blog The Rising Storm has a nice write up on the album, warning of its not-so-instant appeal:

When you are a Beach Boys nut, everything you read about this record makes you want to conquer it, but it simply isn’t possible your first time through.

On around your 5th time you start to get the hang of the songs. Clearly you are already digging I’ll Bet He’s Nice, easily the stand-out track with its chirpy, whirring, bubbly synth attacks, and maybe even laughing along with Johnny Carson, which the Boys actually got to perform on the late night show! When you hear it the 6th and 7th times, you’ll be by yourself and it’ll be during a nap, but it is at this point that The Night Was So Young and Airplane stuck in your head. Even the album opener should start to resonate with that Love You warmth around now.

So if you’re a Beach Boys fan who hasn’t had the Love You experience yet, I’d highly recommend it. Perfect music to close out a fun-lovin’ & sun-lovin’ summer.

Meant For You - The Beach Boys (1968)

Opening their album Friends, this track is simple, loving and wonderful on every level.

Mike Love delivers a sweet and tender vocal that just… it just melts your heart. Despite Mike Love being a feckless prick, he really shines on this and makes it one of the signature Beach Boys tunes.
